Artist Statement

My ceramic work tells stories that are universally understood, reflecting the human condition dealing with “Man’s inhumanity to man” and nature and indifference concerning the stewardship of our shared environment as expressed through an emotional narrative. My characters face difficult circumstances (sometime using humor to lighten the situation) resulting in an emotional reaction in my audience.

I rely on body language as a metaphor for human emotion, transforming my characters into psychological portraits often representing ourselves.

My work’s inspiration originated when I saw a sad and injured pigeon in a big city struggling to deal with its man-made artificial environment. The empathy I had for its condition and admiration for its fortitude prompted my desire to create a body of work in ceramics depicting it and other characters facing their daily struggles.

In my paintings I like expressing many areas of  subject matter- sometimes featuring a form of glass- with a degree of realism, while showing light and shadow in a slightly impressionistic manner.
